Creating effective NDIS goals is a key part of your NDIS plan. These goals form the foundation of your supports and make each NDIS journey unique. So, what are some examples of NDIS goals, and how can you set the best ones to get the supports that enhance your life?
Understanding NDIS Goals
NDIS goals are the achievements you aim for with the support of the NDIS. These goals are included in your NDIS plan and are based on your discussions with your Local Area Coordinator during planning meetings or plan reviews. For a support to be funded by the NDIS, it must help you achieve one of your NDIS goals.
Examples of NDIS Goals
NDIS goals can vary and will be different for everyone, for example:
- Physical: “I want to walk unassisted.”
- Social: “I want to make new friends.”
- Independence: “I want to build my confidence traveling alone.”
Goals can be short-term (achievable within 12 months) or medium to long-term (achievable over two to three years or longer). They will evolve as you progress through different life stages, such as moving out of home, getting a job, or finishing school.
Characteristics of Good NDIS Goals
While your goals will be personal to your situation, good NDIS goals usually share these characteristics:
- Outcome-Focused: Focus on what you want to achieve rather than how you will achieve it. For example, “to communicate more confidently” is more outcome-focused than “to have speech therapy.”
- Flexibility: Broad goals allow for more flexibility in using your funding. For example, “to learn how to express myself through creativity” is more flexible than “to learn pottery.”
- Areas for Improvement: Think about areas of your life you want to improve, like “I want to improve my health and fitness” or “I want to socialize more.”
- Capacity Building: Goals that aim to build your capacity and reduce reliance on others are beneficial. For example, “I want to be more independent.”
- Personal: The best goals are those that will help you achieve what you want. Examples include “I want to train my pet to become an assistance dog” or “I want to connect with my cultural heritage.”
Setting Your NDIS Goals
Start by reflecting on your life—what you enjoy, what you want to improve, and what you aim to achieve in the short and long term. It can be helpful to brainstorm with a friend or family member. Make a list of your ideas and group them under themes. Narrow your list to two goals for the next 12 months and two to three goals for the future.
By setting thoughtful and personalized NDIS goals, you can ensure that your supports are aligned with your aspirations and enhance your quality of life.
